What is a Palta?

Indian classical music has been around for centuries, just like Western classical music. Melody (Sur), harmony & rhythm (Lay), which are common in all types of music, are common elements between Western and Indian music too. But Indian music is specifically advanced in melody.

There are many techniques for learning and mastering melody in Indian music. But the fundamental practice of "Palta" or “Alankar” is easily adaptable to all kinds of music and musicians.

A “Palta” is a simple phrase of musical notes repeated in the Ascending Order (Aaroha) and Descending Order (Avaroha) of a musical Scale.

It is similar to a word formed from Consonants and Vowels in English. Just like learning the pronunciations of the Alphabet; practicing each Palta composed of a unique phrase, is a stepping stone to learning and mastering the language of music.

Regular practice of Palta’s is essential for getting more awareness of comprehending the musical notes and creating original music by the technique of improvisation.

Practicing Palta’s in various Scales (Raag’s) and Time Signatures (Taal) / tempos will automatically enhance the level of concentration, and the awareness of melody (Sur) and rhythm (Lay).
